The Multinational Force in Beirut, 1982-1984 by Anthony McDermottISBN: 9780813010519

The multinational peacekeeping operations in Beirut from the summer of 1982 to early 1984 were daring attempts by a small group of Western powers to exert, on their terms, a positive influence on the situation in the Lebanese capital and its immediate environs. In June 1982, Israel attacked the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Lebanon. Israeli forces soon reached Beirut and threatened to destroy the PLO headquarters there. Military contingents from the United States, France, and Italy, constituting Multinational Force I (MNF I), were dispatched to the area to prevent further bloodshed and to help organize an orderly departure of the Palestinian (and some Syrian) fighters from West Beirut. Having successfully accomplished its task, the First Multinational Force was dissolved in August.
