Stop 4 -- Pershing House, Quarters 1

(Building 22126)

This is the largest house on Officer’s Row and is traditionally the residence of the Commanding Officer of the Fort. Opposite the flagpole at the center of the parade field, the ranking officer could survey the activity and ceremony of post life, as well as scenery beyond. The adobe building was completed in 1884 at a cost of $9,000. The first occupant was likely Captain Adna R. Chaffee, who occupied it for a short time before he was transferred to another fort. As a Lieutenant General, he became Chief of Staff of the Army from 1904 to 1906 and was the father of Major General Adna Chaffee Jr. Major General Adna Chaffee Jr. was known as both the father of the U.S. Army armored tank doctrine as well as the pioneer of mechanized warfare used in WWII. Overnight guests at these quarters include Generals Crook and Nelson A. Miles in 1886, General of the Armies John J. Pershing (in whose honor the quarters are named) in 1922 and 1935, and General George C. Marshall in 1942.
