Stop 6 -- Crook House, Quarters 2

(Building 22120)

Constructed in 1884, this house is named for General George Crook, the Indian Wars leader and one–time commander of the Department of Arizona, who played a key role in subduing Arizona’s Apaches. Known occupants of this home were Captain Augustus C. Macomb, commander of Troop A, Fifth Cavalry, and post commander from July 1900 to March 1901; Major General Fred Miller, commanding general of the 93rd Infantry Division which trained at Huachuca during World War II; and Major General Edward M. Almond, commanding general of the 92nd Infantry Division which replaced the 93rd at this World War II training base. The large single dormer construction of the upstairs of this home was a modification during an extensive 1930s renovation of the building. Before that time, it had the three dormer windows like the other quarters. Another house, two doors ahead, had the same change made to the upstairs.
